Will Alvaro Morata flop at Chelsea next season?

After all the fuss, Chelsea finally landed Morata. Some time ago, Man United were the favorites to get Alvaro Morata, but Mourinho swerved the steering wheel and landed at Lukaku who was previously a Chelsea target. So it is fair to say it is a footballing trade by barter, or better still – Chelsea and Man United exchanged seats on the dining table!

That Chelsea were in the market moving from store to store, examining the strikers on the counter doesn’t come as very surprising. The handwritings in the wall needed no genius Daniel to interpret them. Diego Costa’s days were numbered in London. Right from when the wind from China started to sway his eyes, culminating to the bust up with Chelsea coach Antonio, it was already likely Costa was already moving his luggage to the garage out of Stamford Bridge.

On the other hand, Morata was getting intensely uncomfortable in Madrid. The Santiago Bernabeu bench looks set to lose a pair of Spanish bottoms which kept the dust off them. Morata largely clamored for more game time. But looking at the sophisticated forward line of the Madrid BBC trident (Benzema, Bale, and Cristiano), there was almost no room for Morata to lodge on the field of play. Yet whenever Zidane called on him, he sure represented himself as a steamy pot of delicious goals. Even in a bit part role last season, Morata managed to scoop 19 goals. When logic is sprinkled into the situation, it gets more effervescent and disturbing. Did Morata deserve more?
The statistics show that last season, Morata had more goals-per-minute than any member of the BBC. Morata averaged a goal every 104 minutes followed Ronaldo at 119, Benzema lagged at 149 while Bale tailed off at 173. This was a solid exhibit for the judge Zidane to extradite one of the BBC off the pitch and get Morata in. But this wasn’t the case. This was even worse considering that Zidane had promised Morata game time to lure him from Juventus back to Madrid. So it was a situation of Zidane breaking a gentleman’s agreement and flinging off his promise to Morata like a burning shirt. And with the World Cup approaching, Morata had to jump boat else he drowned.

Now with Chelsea, the premiership is a different footballing terrain. Would Morata bring a heavy downpour of goals to Stamford Bridge? Would he rather bring a drought? Many Chelsea fans have their hands scratching their heads like they are searching for diamond in their hair, pondering if the £70 million Chelsea forked out would turn out good business. Not all importation of players from players from foreign leagues ended up successfully. A good number of them ended up contraband goods that were quickly dispatched by burly premier league defenders. We had the likes of Janssen for Tottenham and Depay for Man United. Both were kings in their previous kingdom but were given no red carpet arrival in the league. Would Morata justify the heavy money on his head and hefty hopes of the Chelsea faithful?

The purchase doesn’t really look like buying a 1969 Volkswagen Beetle for a million dollars. It seems more promising. Morata has proven himself on the big stage, he has scored crucial goals in the Champions league, he is skillful, and has a sharp nose for goal as shown in his apt positioning. He is more of an upgrade on the fiery Costa who scored more fights than goals last season!
