The Belgian Jupiler league is starting this weekend. One of the most exciting competitions in the European football will start with a match between the current champions and the promoted side with rich history. Reigning rulers, Anderlecht will travel to Antwerpen to meet Royal Antwerp FC. It will be the match between two clubs who were fierce rivals once upon a time.
Royal Antwerp FC overview
The home side in this match had won the promotion to the Jupiler league after the playoffs. But they haven’t prepared very well for the upcoming season. When looking at the arrivals, we see that they are mostly players who were free agents or the ones on loan from some other clubs. Royal Antwerp FC had only one victory during the pre-season games. They defeated a lower league team Zwarte Leeuw 0-2. Apart from this, they had two draws and one loss. It is interesting that 3 of those 4 games ended with both teams to score. Also, all games have finished with a moderate number of goals, between 2 and 3.
The champions have just one thing in their mind regarding this season, and that is another title. They already made a good intro by winning the Belgium Super Cup. Anderlecht made a superb come back against Zulte Varegem and clinched the first trophy of the season. They were losing at the half time, but eventually, Purple & White
won with 2-1. Before this match, Anderlecht had played three games during the pre-season warm up. They were smashed in the first one against Red Bull Salzburg, 4-1 and after this contest, they won all the rest. It is interesting that in all games won, the champions have scored at least 2 goals.
Like in the previous years, this squad will rely mostly on offense and high-efficiency.
Head to head matches
The most recent match between these two sides happened 13 years ago. It was played in Antwerpen, and the guests had more success by winning 0-2. Currently, in the last 3 games, Anderlecht had put down convincing victories with at least 2 goals margin. Royal Antwerp FC’s last win came in 2002 on 15th of September, at home, 2-1.
Despite being the opening game of the season, in which we often saw some surprises, for us Anderlecht is a sure winner here. When we look the overall performances during the preseason, there is no doubt that the biggest club in Belgium has an advantage in this match up. The hosts are probably the largest team in the league, and they are heading back to the second division at the end of the season.
Also, we think that the guests are going to score at least 2 goals here. The champs are much better in all lines, and especially up front.
